PRESERVING YOUR CANNABIS

We go to great lengths to ensure that your cannabis flower is produced, handled, and stored under flawless conditions; however, once our products enter your hands, it is then your responsibility to preserve it. Nevertheless, we would like to help you in every way possible and make preservation an effortless task, which is why we created this step-by-step guide to storing your cannabis flower. We urge you to read the information below in its entirety, as these simple steps are critical to your flower’s quality, your health, and your experience.

CANNABIS STORAGE

The first step towards sufficiently storing your cannabis flower is understanding the various storage options, materials, and the pros/cons of each. As expected, Florescence has you covered! We provide optimal glass packaging upon purchase of all products.

An informative breakdown can be found below:

  1. Glass Containers (Best 6/6)

Advantages: Excellent at retaining aroma, taste, moisture, and potency; Least adhesive to trichomes; Generally allows for a cooler interior environment; Excellent at preserving flower shape, texture, and structure; Glass is not static

    Disadvantages: Susceptible to breaking

  2. Plastic Containers (5/6)

Advantages: Descent at retaining aroma, taste, moisture, and potency; Excellent at preserving flower shape and structure; Not susceptible to breaking

Disadvantages: No regulation over interior temperature; May alter flower texture; More susceptible to oxidation; Very adhesive to trichomes

  3. Mylar Bags (4/6)

Advantages: If air-tight, mylar is quite successful at retaining aroma, taste, moisture, and potency; Sometimes opaque; Mylar is not static; Very durable; Successful at regulating a cool interior temperature

Disadvantages: Easily alters flower shape, texture, and structure; terrible at retaining aroma, taste, moisture, and potency if not air-tight; Extremely adhesive to trichomes; Sometimes Transparent

  4. Aluminum Containers (3/6)

Advantages: Descent at retaining moisture and potency; slightly adhesive to trichomes; Generally allows for a cooler interior environment; Excellent at preserving flower shape and structure; Not susceptible to breaking; Always opaque

Disadvantages: Could alter aroma and taste, appearing more metallic; Aluminum is static; Adhesive to trichomes

  5. Plastic Bags (2/6)

Advantages: If air-tight and opaque, plastic bags are descent at retaining aroma, taste, moisture, and potency

Disadvantages: No regulation over interior temperature; Easily alters flower shape, texture, and structure; Plastic bags are static; Terrible at retaining aroma, taste, moisture, and potency if not air-tight; Easy to puncture/break; Extremely adhesive to trichomes; Commonly translucent

  6. No Enclosure (Worst 1/6)

    Advantages: None

Disadvantages: No regulation over environmental temperature and moisture; Quickly degrades aroma, taste, moisture, and potency; Quickly alters texture and oxidation; Results in very harsh smoke; Exposes flower to contaminants of all sorts

OPAQUE V. TRANSPARENT

Now that you understand storage options/materials, the next consideration is opaque versus transparent storage options. Cannabis aroma, taste, and potency are dictated by components known as cannabinoids and terpenes, which reside within trichomes on cannabis flower. Unfortunately, cannabinoids, and some terpenes, are photosensitive, meaning they degrade at exposure to light. Aside form quality assurance, opaque storage also allows for a sense of privacy, keeping your product discrete at all times. Furthermore, opaque storage options are always superior to transparent or translucent storage options.

Once again, Florescence has you covered! All of our packaging is 100% opaque, completely eliminating all traces of light from penetrating storage containers and reaching your cannabis flower, further preserving aroma, taste, and potency.

AIR-TIGHT V. PENETRABLE

So, we have now established that opaque glass packaging is optimal for cannabis storage and preservation, but what about seals? Our cannabis has been handled and stored under extremely precise conditions to maintain the perfect levels of moisture, keeping flower spongey, sticky, and smooth-hitting. In order to preserve these conditions, it is essential that cannabis is ALWAYS stored under air-tight settings when not in use to prevent oxidation and retain overall quality. When exposed to oxygen, cannabis quality diminishes rapidly, including degraded potency, loss of moisture content, and harsher smoke when ignited, so keep your containers shut!

As always, Florescence has you covered again! All of our packaging is first sealed with a tamper-evident seal, creating a 100% air-tight seal, entirely preventing oxidation prior to opening. When this seal is broken, your cannabis is still preserved, as our caps are all foam-lined and pressure sensitive, meaning they create their own air-tight seal as well.

HUMIDITY & TEMPERATURE

Humidity is the final aspect of preservation that we must discuss. Humidity keeps flower fresh, maintains a spongey, fluffy texture, and contributes towards extraordinarily smooth and flavorful smoke. However, if cannabis storage conditions were to fall outside of adequate humidity thresholds, flower may become dry and brittle, which ultimately degrades potency and flavor. Moreover, humidity can be challenging to regulate, as cannabis requires a very narrow window of humidity to maintain optimal moisture. Therefore, one of the most common ways of sustaining adequate humidity in cannabis is accompanying it with a humidity pack. Humidity packs are small packets consisting of calculated water and salt ratios that regulate humidity levels in a small container.

We wouldn’t be able to provide you with quality if we didn’t provide you with humidity packs, so Florescence has you covered! Each eighth jar of raw cannabis flower comes with a 62% humidity pack, keeping your flower within perfect conditions. However, it is important to note that these humidity packs lose efficacy as they are exposed to environments outside the jar, so keep those lids on at all times when not in use. We recommend never removing humidity packs until all flower is used.

Apart from humidity, temperature should also be somewhat regulated, which is not too difficult. Unfortunately, there is no way Florescence can keep your flower at a specific temperature, but the general rule is to store your cannabis in a cool and dry location. Ideal temperatures for cannabis storage are between 60-68°F. NEVER freeze cannabis flower, as trichomes will break away from plant matter, causing taste, aroma, and potency to diminish rapidly. If temperatures fall too low or rise too high, potency and flavor will diminish as flower becomes dry and brittle.

PRE-ROLLS

Unlike raw cannabis flower, pre-rolls are treated slightly differently. Because pre-rolls are meant to be used in a relatively short period of time and flower is tightly compacted within a rolling paper, no humidity pack is necessary. Furthermore, you may be wondering, what if I don’t finish my pre-roll in one sitting? This is very common, and some individuals like to use the same pre-roll over the course of one to even four days, depending on usage and tolerance. However, you should be sufficiently informed on how to save a partially smoked joint for future use.

When a joint is ignited and then extinguished, it retains a very distinctive and unfavorable smokey smell. When extinguished joints are then confined to a small container, the scent sits and causes the entire joint to permanently smell and taste like smoke/ash. To avoid this, simply cut the partially burned tip off of the pre-roll with a pair of scissors before storing it. This may not completely eliminate the smoke/ash aroma and taste, but it will certainly help.
